Stocks and Shares ISA's

Just because it has Stock and Shares in the title does not mean you have to invest in Stocks and Shares!

Stocks & Shares ISAs are a perfect vehicle for investors who are willing to accept some investment risks. If you have capital available in your deposit account over and above your emergency fund and your planned expenditure then it generally makes sense to utilise your annual ISA allowance.

The most important issues for consideration become;

  • How much can I afford put into my ISA without leaving my emergency fund short?
  • How much risk am I willing to/do I need to take?
  • Do I need a lot of income, a little income and some growth or just capital growth?

Your adviser will be able to research and select the right investments for your circumstances. Over a number of years the annual contributions together with capital appreciation may create a substantial tax efficient lump sum within your ISA account. It will become more important at this stage to ensure that you create a balanced portfolio to increase your chances of a successful outcome.

Investors at the cautious end of the risk scale can consider purchasing bond based collective funds and high yielding income funds. Some might wish to consider taking advantage of the retail fixed interest corporate bonds and Gilts.

Investors with a moderate attitude to investment risk can consider dividend paying Blue Chip Companies or equity based collective funds. Additionally managed and distribution funds are able to provide a rising income and some capital appreciation over time.

Investors looking for a more adventurous investment can consider Growth and Aggressive Growth collective funds and direct equities in more growth orientated companies.

Additionally Stocks and Shares ISAs allow investment into:

  • Commodities such as Gold, silver and oil.
  • Property funds
  • Exchange Traded Funds
  • Exchange Trade Commodities
  • Money Market Funds

Individual funds need to comply with the ISA eligibility rules.

The wider range of asset classes, investment styles and products available within a Stocks and Shares ISA make it an ideal investment vehicle. It can easily be transformed from capital growth to providing income, from an aggressive investment to a cautious one as you circumstances and needs change.
