Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)

REITs are shares issued by a property company. In many ways REITs are similar to normal listed companies that trade on the open market.

The main differences are that their main business comes from managing a rent producing property portfolio and they distribute most of the income after costs in the form of a dividend. To qualify as a REIT the company must pay 90% of their taxable profits. By paying away most of the profits the REIT company avoids having to pay tax

REITs can be very useful for investors seeking income however one should note that the capital value is likely to be subject to market volatility
