Prepare for a long journey
Many people wish to own their own business to participate from ownership benefits; however, owning your own business is not a short term consideration. If you don't want the worry of the day to day management of your own business, you can always buy a piece of a well-established existing business. Share ownership is a very similar experience to owning your own business and you will be affected by the financial ups and downs of that company as a part owner.

Historically, ownership investments have outperformed other types of investment over the long term. As the profits of the firm grow so should your returns. But also, should the company's fortunes decline so should your returns. Businesses will go through a number of market cycles and therefore having a long term outlook is essential to achieving long term success. Temporary market downturns may even provide an opportunity to buy investments at a lower price. At the same time if you have held an investment for some time and it is no longer in tune with your needs, it may be time to sell regardless of past performance.

Our core belief is to buy quality investments with the intention of holding them for the long-term. This is known as a "buy, hold and review" philosophy.

The graph below highlights the relationship between the dividend paid per share and the price of the share. The share price will fluctuate daily as result of market movements and the perceived prospects of the company. Once announced, dividends do not change unless there is a dramatic change in fortune of the company and in their ability to pay them. In this example, even during the market turbulence of 2007 to 2009, investors seeking income did not suffer. Selling out during the credit crunch would have lost the income and may have consolidated a loss. Staying invested has seen the shareholder rewarded with continued income and further inflation-beating increase in capital value over the long term.
